Kremlin says watchdog acts to enforce Twitter to respect law
MOSCOW, Mar 17 (PRIME) – The slowing down of Twitter by the Russian communications service is aimed at making laws, which are openly violated, respected, President Vladimir Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday.
“It’s a supervising authority, and a supervising authority acts strictly in line with the laws of the Russian Federation. The watchdog does not act against Twitter and cannot do it. They are acting to make the Russian laws complied with and enforce companies to respect the Russian laws if they refuse to do it on purpose,” Peskov said.
The communications service has been slowing work of the microblogging social network since March 10 for its failure to delete posts with banned information. The watchdog gave Twitter a month and said it can block it fully.
Peskov also said that the president’s administration is informed about the watchdog’s actions.
“But in this case, the communications service performs its duties, it is its function. One cannot imagine any company of any size that works in the IT sphere, in the sphere of social networks and so forth, and violates laws of the Russian Federation. In case of large companies, of medium size, micro firms, equal actions should be done to bring them back to law,” he said.
